Column: After a decade of success, Dabo Swinney is suddenly under fire at Clemson

Published Mon, 25 Nov 2024 05:59:13 GMT

Column: After a decade of success, Dabo Swinney is suddenly under fire at Clemson Dabo Swinney is a bit testy these days, which is certainly understandable. He was once the hottest college football coach in all the land, the guy who seemed poised to supplant Nick Saban as the G.O.A.T. of the sideline. Now, after struggling to adapt to the rapidly changing times, ol’ Dabo is suddenly leading a Clemson program that looks downright ordinary. So, when a bold fan called in to challenge the deteriorating state of the Tigers on Swinney’s radio show this week, the coach showed just how thin his skin has become.Let the fireworks begin!“Listen, man, you can have your opinion all you want, and you can apply for the job. And good luck to you,” Swinney angrily lectured a caller identified only as “Tyler from Spartanburg.”While it’s true that a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately mindset is the bane of college athletics, there is no denying that Tyler from Spartanburg was on to something with his critical assessment of Swinney’s once-powerhouse program.Since ...

Stock market today: Wall Street closes its best week of the year with even more gains NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street steamrolled even higher Friday as it closed out its best week in nearly a year. The S&P 500 climbed 40.56 points, or 0.9%, to 4,358.34 and rose every day of the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 222.24, or 0.7%, to 34,061.32, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 184.09, or 1.4%, to 13,478.28.Stocks surged through the week on rising hopes the Federal Reserve is finally done with its market-crunching hikes to interest rates, meant to get inflation under control. A report on Friday underscored that pressure is easing on inflation after it showed employers hired fewer workers last month than economists expected. It’s a stunning turnaround from just a week ago, when Wall Street was reeling after the S&P 500 had fallen 10% below its high point for the year. That sent Wall Street’s main index into what investors call a “correction.”Since then strong profit reports helped drive some stocks to towering gains. Generac, a maker of backup ge...

(AP) — Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel said Friday that Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks briefly lost consciousness and is in the concussion protocol after being carted off the field in the final minutes of a loss to Pittsburgh.Vrabel said he had texted with Burks and hopes the second-year receiver will be back as soon as possible.“From what it looked like, I would say it’s going to be as good of a prognosis as what it could have been,” Vrabel said. “Just looking at the visual of all that. We understand what the risks are involved, and Treylon (Burks) sold out to make a play and unfortunately didn’t.”Burks being knocked unconscious is why medical personnel reacted by strapping the receiver to a backboard and cut his face mask off. Players from both teams knelt or stood on the Acrisure Stadium turf nearby watching.“It sounds like everybody did exactly what they’re supposed to do based on the protocol and making sure that Treylon’s well-being was looked after as quickly...

(AP) — The Tennessee Titans reach the halfway point of the NFL season unable to win away from home or close out close games. One thing is clear: Rookie Will Levis has shown enough in his first two NFL starts to be their quarterback because he gives the Titans their best chance to win now and in the future. The 33rd pick overall out of Kentucky has twice as many touchdown passes (four) as veteran Ryan Tannehill who started the first six games. Levis’ first turnover came Thursday night throwing into the end zone of a 20-16 loss at Pittsburgh, while Tannehill has six interceptions with two TD passes. Coach Mike Vrabel said Friday he isn’t ready to name Levis the starting quarterback yet, wanting to see Tannehill healthy first. Vrabel also wants to check the health of his team after four of his five starting offensive linemen went down with injuries, along with a banged-up secondary. The Titans (3-5) sit at the bottom of the AFC South with the weekend off and...
