Wall Street drifts ahead of inflation, earnings reports

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 23:04:25 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is drifting Tuesday, with stocks and bonds making only modest moves ahead of reports later in the week with the potential to move markets. The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged in quiet, midday trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 77 points, or 0.2%, at 33,664, as of 11 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.5% lower. That’s why markets are gearing up for Wednesday’s report on inflation. Economists expect it to show inflation slowed to 5.2% in March from 6% in February. That would mean continued progress since inflation peaked last summer, but it would also still be well above the Fed’s target. A reading that’s hi...

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Independent Serbian journalists on Tuesday marked the 24th anniversary of the killing of a prominent editor and newspaper publisher who was fiercely critical of the government in Belgrade.Slavko Curuvija was shot dead at the entrance to his Belgrade apartment during the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia over its crackdown against Kosovo Albanian separatists. His killing became a symbol of the struggle for a free press in the Balkan nation that is seeking membership in the European Union.Independent media organizations, both local and international, warn that critical journalists still face threats because of their work. Old, cheap drug seen as new post-sex tool to fight rising STD rates

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 23:04:25 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials released data Tuesday showing how chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis cases have been accelerating, but doctors are hoping an old drug will help fight the sexually transmitted infections.Experts believe STDs have been rising because of declining condom use, inadequate sex education and reduced testing during the COVID-19 pandemic.Millions of Americans are infected each year. Rates are highest in men who have sex with men, and among Black and Hispanic Americans and Native Americans.“Sexually transmitted infections are an enormous, low-priority public health problem. And they’ve been a low-priority problem for decades, in spite of the fact that they are the most commonly reported kind of infectious disease,” said Dr. John M. Douglas Jr., a retired health official who lectures at the Colorado School of Public Health. To try to turn the tide, many doctors see promise in doxycycline, a cheap antibiotic that has been sold for more than 50 years...

What are the symptoms of Candida auris, the drug-resistant fungus spreading in 28 states?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 23:04:25 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – A potentially deadly fungus that's resistant to treatment has been confirmed in at least 28 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned, but identifying the dangerous pathogen is actually quite difficult. Candida auris, or C. auris for short, isn't possible to identify with commonly available lab tests, making the already dangerous fungus even harder to treat early and properly. To make matters even more complicated, symptoms of a Candida auris infection aren't distinct from other (much more common) infections. Symptoms can include high fever and chills — common signs your body is fighting an infection of some sort. If they don't go away with antibiotics, that could be one indication it's Candida auris, according to Mount Sinai Hospital. What makes Candida auris so dangerous? Because the symptoms aren't distinct, a Candida auris infection is often diagnosed "based on epidemiologic scenarios" and context clues, explained Melissa Nolan, an assistant pro...

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A mysterious animal swimming in Lady Bird Lake was recently identified by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a nutria, which is a common rodent, often compared to beavers. Nutria spotted in Lady Bird Lake — what is it? But they're not always great neighbors. TPWD said in a post titled “Texas’ most unwanted plants and animals” that nutria eat aquatic vegetation and burrow, “which can lead to erosion and damage roads.”Nutria can also be territorial and sometimes will lash out and become aggressive, according to Dr. Briana Armstrong from Firehouse Animal Health Center. Avoid nutriaArmstrong said she doesn't often hear about nutria attacks on pets, but it can happen if people and/or their dogs are in the rodent's territory. "If you're in their feeding grounds, or they have offspring with them, or you've cornered them, then sometimes they'll respond and lash out and become aggressive," Armstrong explained. "So those are kind of the scenarios where you want to ...
